A splint is a device that holds your jaw in a new, more aligned position. Other names for this device are; "occlusal splint" or "occlusal guard." Whatever you call it, a splint protects your teeth from the damaging effects of clenching, grinding and other bad biting habits.
To be most effective the splint must be worn as prescribed. If you require full time wear, take it out only to clean it. Outside your mouth the splint is easily broken or lost due to its size and clear coloring, so please remember to put it in its case when not in use.
Please keep the appliance clean. It can be brushed with a toothbrush and toothpaste or soap and water, whatever you prefer. Baking soda and water remove debris also, if your splint requires additional cleaning.
Your speech will be affected by the splint, especially the "s" and "th" sounds. Speaking will return to normal with practice.
Avoid vigorous chewing while wearing the splint. The splint is designed to relax the TMJ. Chewing hard or sticky foods will add unecessary pressure on the joint and could cause pain or locking of the jaw.
The splint will continue to change your bite as you wear it regularly. You will need to schedule adjustment appointments with Dr. Teel to have it realigned to your "new bite."
