The Herbst Appliance
The Herbst Appliance will help to bring your lower jaw forward and improve your bite.
What can I expect with this appliance?
Bullet 1 You may have some light tenderness in your jaw.
Bullet 2 You may experience some irritation inside your cheeks.
Bullet 3 Placing soft dental wax over a pokey area can help.
Bullet 4 You may have to eat a soft diet for the first few days.

What should I avoid??
  • Please don't play with your appliance.
  • Avoid hard foods and big bites of food.
  • Don't open your mouth too wide, the rod will slip out of the tube.
MOST COMMON PROBLEMS
The most common problem with the Herbst is the rod coming out of the tube, due to the patient opening their mouth too wide.
  • You may get sores in your mouth due to the appliance rubbing your cheeks.
  • Rinsing with warm salt water will relieve some pain.
  • We recommend some oral numbing gels such as Zilactin-B.
  • Placing cotton rolls in your mouth, nest to the tubes, can cushion and prevent more sores.
If any part of your appliance breaks or if a screw comes out or loose, please feel free to call for an appointment.
